FCPS Overview

 

FCPS is the Fellowship of College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP) Pakistan. CPSP Pakistan is a body responsible for Post graduation in Pakistan, maintains post graduate trainee doctors database and conducts examinations.

FCPS is comprised of FCPS-I Examination, FCPS Training, IMM examination (Intermediate Module), The Dissertation, Workshops and FCPS-II examination.

After passing FCPS-I exam, you will be eligible to get a Trainee post at any recognized teaching hospital for training by CPSP. There are fixed numbers of paid posts for trainees in each department, so you may not get a paid post in your desired hospital but an honorary trainee post, for which you will not get any stipend or pay. After a paid seat gets vacant, you will be preferred for that paid seat.

Components of FPCS Training

 After getting a training post, you will be on duty roster of trainees, referred as PGs. The responsibilities and workload on a PG is more as he is learning, and he must learn by hard work. The responsibilities increase as he moves up the training ladder.

During the training, you will take 3 mandatory workshops within the first 18 months, while the surgery PG would take 4.

Computer and Internet Skills: This workshop is of 5 days, and is about how to use computers and internet. If you are skilled about this, you can take skills assessment test for this workshop.

Research Methodology, Biostatistics and Dissertation Writing: It is also of 5 days, comprising of learning how to conduct a research, interpret that data, and finally make a dissertation.

Communication Skills: This is a 3 days course teaching how to effectively communicate in presentations, seminars and workshops.

Basic Surgical Skills: For Surgical PGs only, it lasts for 3 days.

The workshops are held several times a year.

The Dissertation

Synopsis is the first step for the dissertation, it is the seeking of approval for the topic of dissertation including how would the dissertation work be carried out, in detail. After approval you would start your research and dissertation writing. It should be original work of research that is to be submitted at least 9 months before the PG wants to appear in FCPS-II examination.

IMM Examination

The Intermediate Module Examination can be taken after 2 years of training. After passing you will get certificate of passing IMM and also MCPS diploma provided all the requirements for that have been met.

Cost of FCPS

FCPS is the most cheapest option available, as compared to USMLE, PLAB, AMC etc. The costs involve:

FCPS-I Exam Fee Rs.15000
Registration Fee as a FCPS Trainee Rs. 6,500
Workshops Rs. 25,000 - 35000
Dissertation Rs. 1,000 - 1500
FCPS-II Exam Fee Rs. 15,000

Assuming the exams are passed in first attempt, which is not the case with majority, the cost ranges from 60,000 to 80,000 PKR roughly.

VENUE OF EXAMINATION

Theory examination is conducted at Karachi, Hyderabad, Ouetta, Bahawalpur, Multan, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Larkana, Abbottabad, Nawabshah, Kathmandu (Nepal) and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The choice of the city should be clearly written in the appropriate box in the application form. The CPSP reserves the right to delete a particular centre, or shift the candidates from one Centre lo another on account of logistic reasons.
