A 28-year-old woman gave a 3-day history of ascending sensory disturbance, beginning in her feet. She had noticed progressive difficulty in climbing stairs, with some low backache. She had difficulty in voiding urine.
On examination, she had normal cranial nerve function. Power was normal in the arms. Her legs showed moderate proximal weakness but more severe distal weakness. She was areflexic and the plantar responses were flexor. Sensory testing was normal.
